I have had a long standing interest in clinical trials, medical statistics and, from a clinical perspective, rehabilitation of musculo-skeletal and chronic conditions. I work with clinicians from a variety of backgrounds to develop pragmatic clinical trial designs to capture the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a variety of health technologies. I am Chief Investigator for a number of trials of rehabilitation interventions, and Head of the Rehabilitation Research Group in the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculo-skeletal Sciences at the University of Oxford.
Prior to taking up the post of Co-Director of OCTRU, I was the Foundation Director of the Warwick Clinical Trials Unit at the University of Warwick, taking that unit from inception to full registration with the UKCRC and a staff compliment of nearly 100. I continue to work collaboratively with the Warwick Unit. I am a theme lead for the Oxford Centre for Applied Health Care Research and Leadership, and Senior Investigator for the Royal College of Surgeons Clinical Trials unit and Oxford Biomedical Research Unit.
I am an NIHR Senior Investigator, and I was the first female Chair of the Health Technology Assessment Programme Funding Board, and I serve as Deputy Chair to the NIHR Clinician Scientist Panel and, until recently, the NIHR Research Methodology Fellowships and Internships panel. I have served as an international member of the AGS/BGS Fall Guideline Panel, and more recently, as a member of the NICE guideline panel of hip fracture management. Previously I have been a member of the International Panel for Accreditation of UK Clinical Trials Units.
My expertise is in the following areas: Clinical Trial/Medical Statistics, phase III Clinical Trials Design, creative designs to replicate clinical practice, maximise patient flow and minimise research error; reporting of trials, particularly of complex interventions; running trials, including efficient design, recruitment, retention, organisational structures for trial management; novel statistical designs for Phase III trials; Heath Technology Appraisal.
My clinical interests are exercise and physical activity; management of musculo-skeletal conditions, including acute trauma; critical care; muscle mass, function and frailty; gerontological rehabilitation and the implementation of research findings
