Margaret is currently a researcher in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences at University of Oxford. She joined the department in December 2012 to work on HoldFAST, a multi-centre study (in collaboration with the Universities of Bristol and Keele) of patients with a diagnosis of heart failure and at high risk of hospital admission for exacerbation of symptoms. Using ethnographic methods, such as non-participant observation of health care events, patient/carer diaries, as well as in-depth interviews with patients, carers and professionals involved in their care, Margaret investigated the experience of patients and carers in their journey through primary, secondary and social care, to gain a detailed understanding of the way services run and how they impact on patients’ lives.
With a professional background in speech and language therapy, Margaret became a health services researcher in 2005 and since then has worked on various studies conducted in the fields of health care and health care education, involving both quantitative and qualitative methods. She has previously been very active in teaching research methods to health care students and practitioners at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and was an External Examiner on a Masters in Research in Clinical Practice programme for several years. She also has experience of Masters and Doctoral level supervision and has acted as an External Examiner at Doctoral level on two occasions to date.
Her current research is funded by the Oxford CLAHRC and includes an ethnographic study of older patients’ experiences of using an Emergency Multidisciplinary Unit (EMU) and the evaluation of dementia-friendly environmental changes in care homes in Oxfordshire (Dignity Plus). She is involved in teaching on the qualitative research methods programme for HERG and the MSc in Evidence Based Health Care, where she contributes to the qualitative research methods and mixed methods research modules and provides supervision to MSc students.
